Description

Stovetop Smothered Chicken is the ultimate comfort food—golden, seasoned chicken breasts smothered in a creamy gravy, topped with crispy bacon, and made entirely in one skillet. Perfect for busy weeknights or cozy Sunday dinners!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 2 large chicken breasts, halved and pounded to ¾” thick

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ¾ tsp black pepper

  • Dash of cayenne pepper

  • Reserved seasoned flour

For the Sauce:

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2½ cups low-sodium chicken broth

  • ⅓ cup heavy cream

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Poultry seasoning, to taste

For Frying:

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 46 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

  • 24 tbsp bacon drippings

Instructions

  1. Prep the Chicken: Slice and pound the chicken breasts. Mix flour with garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and cayenne. Dredge each piece thoroughly.

  2. Cook the Bacon: In a skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crispy. Reserve 2–4 tbsp drippings and remove excess bits.

  3. Fry the Chicken: In the same skillet, heat bacon drippings and vegetable oil. Fry chicken 4–5 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.

  4. Make the Gravy: In the skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour. Cook until golden. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire and poultry seasoning. Simmer until thickened.

  5. Smother the Chicken: Return chicken to skillet, spoon gravy over top, and let it simmer for a few minutes. Top with crispy bacon and chopped parsley. Serve warm.

Notes

Make ahead tip: Fry chicken and prepare gravy separately, then combine and reheat before serving.
Great served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Skip cayenne for a kid-friendly version, or add extra for a spicy kick.
