Stovetop Smothered Chicken is the ultimate comfort food—golden, seasoned chicken breasts smothered in a creamy gravy, topped with crispy bacon, and made entirely in one skillet. Perfect for busy weeknights or cozy Sunday dinners!
Ingredients
For the Chicken:
2 large chicken breasts, halved and pounded to ¾” thick
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
¾ tsp black pepper
Dash of cayenne pepper
Reserved seasoned flour
For the Sauce:
4 tbsp butter
4 tbsp all-purpose flour
2½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
⅓ cup heavy cream
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Poultry seasoning, to taste
For Frying:
½ cup vegetable oil
4–6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
2–4 tbsp bacon drippings
Instructions
Prep the Chicken: Slice and pound the chicken breasts. Mix flour with garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and cayenne. Dredge each piece thoroughly.
Cook the Bacon: In a skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crispy. Reserve 2–4 tbsp drippings and remove excess bits.
Fry the Chicken: In the same skillet, heat bacon drippings and vegetable oil. Fry chicken 4–5 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.
Make the Gravy: In the skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour. Cook until golden. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire and poultry seasoning. Simmer until thickened.
Smother the Chicken: Return chicken to skillet, spoon gravy over top, and let it simmer for a few minutes. Top with crispy bacon and chopped parsley. Serve warm.
Notes
Make ahead tip: Fry chicken and prepare gravy separately, then combine and reheat before serving.
Great served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Skip cayenne for a kid-friendly version, or add extra for a spicy kick.
