Description

This rich and creamy Homemade Eggnog is the ultimate holiday treat! Made with warm spices, silky egg yolks, and sweet vanilla, it’s cozy, festive, and far better than store-bought. Serve it warm or chilled for a comforting seasonal sip everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk or 2%

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of ground cloves

  • 6 egg yolks, room temperature

  • ½ cup sugar

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Whipped cream (optional)

  • Extra ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium to medium-low heat, combine the milk, cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Whisk frequently while heating until the mixture is just below boiling.

  2. In a separate large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together, adding the sugar 2 tablespoons at a time until fully incorporated.

  3. Slowly ladle about ⅓ cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Continue adding the warm mixture gradually until about ¾ of it is fully combined with the yolks.

  4. Pour the tempered mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the eggnog reaches 160°F and thickens slightly.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Serve warm or chilled. Top with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.

Notes

Chill for at least 2 hours for thicker, classic-style eggnog.

If the mixture becomes slightly lumpy, simply strain it through a fine mesh sieve—easy fix!

For extra richness, replace ½ cup of milk with additional heavy cream.

Store in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
