Description

This Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken is rich, flavorful, and perfect for a cozy dinner. Tender chicken breasts are cooked in a velvety garlic Parmesan sauce, with just the right balance of creaminess and savory flavors. Serve it over pasta, rice, or alongside roasted veggies for a meal that will have everyone asking for seconds!

Ingredients

Scale

For the chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

For the creamy garlic Parmesan sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth (low sodium)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Season and sear the chicken:
Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels, then season both sides with salt, pepper, and paprika. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil or butter and sear the chicken for 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.

  2. Prepare the garlic Parmesan sauce:
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn. Sprinkle the flour over the garlic and stir constantly for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. Add the liquids and cheese:
Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, followed by the heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps. Let the mixture simmer gently for 3-4 minutes until it thickens slightly. Stir in the Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes (if using). Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Combine and simmer:
Return the seared chicken breasts to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them to coat. Lower the heat to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/75°C).

  5. Garnish and serve:
Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley and a little extra Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately over pasta, rice, or with crusty bread to soak up the creamy sauce.

Notes

  • Protein options: This recipe works well with chicken thighs or even shrimp. Adjust cooking time accordingly.
  • Thickening the sauce: If the sauce is too thin, let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes. For a thinner sauce, add a splash of chicken broth.
  • Vegetarian option: Swap chicken for mushrooms or tofu and use vegetable broth.
  • Make it lighter: Use half-and-half or milk instead of heavy cream for a lighter version, though the sauce will be less rich.
