This sweet and spicy BBQ chicken with citrus slaw is a flavor-packed dinner made with hot honey-glazed chicken thighs and a fresh, crunchy slaw with citrusy brightness. Ready in under 30 minutes and perfect for busy nights or backyard dinners!

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Thighs

  • 1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs

  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons hot honey (or regular honey for a mild version)

  • 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce

  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Citrus Slaw

  • 1 small green cabbage, thinly sliced

  • 2 carrots, shaved with a vegetable peeler

  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced

  • ⅓ cup chopped cilantro

  • ¼ cup sliced almonds

  • 12 oranges, segmented and chopped

  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • Big pinch of kosher salt and pepper

  • ¼ cup avocado oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat broiler: Set your oven’s broiler to high and position a rack just beneath it.

  2. Season chicken: Place chicken thighs on a baking sheet. Season well with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.

  3. Broil chicken: Broil for 6 minutes, flip, and broil another 6 minutes.

  4. Make glaze: While chicken cooks, whisk hot honey, BBQ sauce, and apple cider vinegar in a bowl.

  5. Glaze & broil: Brush the chicken with glaze and broil 1 more minute. Flip, glaze again, and repeat 1–2 more times for a nice char.

  6. Make slaw: In a large bowl, combine cabbage, carrots, onion, almonds, cilantro, and oranges. In a separate bowl, whisk lime juice, honey, garlic, salt, and pepper. Slowly whisk in avocado oil until emulsified. Pour over slaw and toss to coat.

  7. Serve: Slice the chicken and place over slaw. Garnish with sesame seeds and enjoy!

Notes

Not a fan of spice? Swap hot honey for regular honey to tame the heat.
Prep ahead: The slaw can be made a few hours in advance and stored in the fridge.
No broiler? Grill or sear the chicken on the stovetop instead.
Perfect for meal prep or summer gatherings!
